Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and brightening ingredient that comes in many forms. The most effective is L-ascorbic acid, the pure form of vitamin C, but it is also the most unstable and pH-sensitive. This instability led to the development of numerous vitamin C derivatives that trade some efficacy for improved stability and gentleness.

Vitamin C works by inhibiting tyrosinase, neutralizing free radicals, and stimulating collagen production. It brightens existing pigmentation, prevents new dark spots from forming, and improves overall skin texture. The challenge is formulation: L-ascorbic acid requires a low pH (around 3.5) and airtight, opaque packaging to remain stable.

Japanese brands have pioneered stable vitamin C derivatives like ascorbyl glucoside, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. These derivatives are gentler and more stable than pure L-ascorbic acid, though they require conversion by the skin to become active. Melano CC and Rohto Vitamin C products are Japanese cult favorites that use stabilized formulations.
