STEP 1Gentle Cleanser
In the morning, you only need a gentle cleanser to wash off the light oil and sweat from overnight. No double cleansing needed since you haven't worn sunscreen. A simple foaming cleanser or micellar water does the job perfectly.
STEP 2Hydrating Toner
Japanese "lotion" is nothing like Western lotion. It's a watery, hydrating liquid (化粧水) that preps your skin to absorb everything after it. Pat onto damp skin right after cleansing.
STEP 3Moisturizer
Seals in all the hydration from the steps before. Japanese moisturizers tend to be lighter than Western ones because the toner and essence layers already did the heavy hydrating.
STEP 4Sunscreen
Non negotiable. Japanese sunscreens are the best in the world: lightweight, cosmetically elegant, no white cast. SPF50+/PA++++ is the standard. Apply as the last step of skincare, before makeup.
