What makes the capsule retinol different?
The retinol acetate is encapsulated in tiny capsules that only break down when they reach your skin. This protects the retinol from degrading in the bottle (retinol oxidizes easily in air and light), so you get a more stable, effective product than most drugstore retinol toners.
Is there a replacement for this now that it's discontinued?
Shiseido doesn't have a direct replacement in the REVITAL line. The closest alternative in the Shiseido family would be the Elixir Superieur Enriched Clear Cream TB, which also uses encapsulated retinol. It's not a toner though, it's a gel cream. For retinol toners, you'd need to look at other brands.
