FAQ
What's sake lees and why is it in skincare?
Sake lees (酒粕, sakekasu) are the nutrient-rich sediment left after sake brewing. They're packed with amino acids, vitamins, and kojic acid, which brightens and hydrates. Japanese brewery workers historically had noticeably soft, bright hands from handling sake lees, which is why it became a skincare ingredient.
Will this actually brighten my skin?
It can help with dullness and mild hyperpigmentation over time thanks to the kojic acid in sake lees. Kojic acid is a melanin inhibitor, similar to arbutin. The catch is it degrades quickly when exposed to light and air, so its effectiveness depends on how fresh the formulation is and how you store it. Keep it in a cool, dark place and use it within 6 months of opening.
Does this smell like sake?
It has a faint fermented rice scent, but it's not strong. Some people describe it as slightly sweet and yeasty. If you've used other fermented rice products (like I'm From Rice Toner or Kikumasamune), it's in that family. The scent fades quickly after application.
