Galactomyces
Also known as: Galactomyces ferment filtrate, GFF
What It Does
A yeast ferment filtrate rich in vitamins, amino acids, and organic acids. The foundation of some of Japan's most iconic skincare products.
Galactomyces ferment filtrate is a yeast ferment extract containing amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and organic acids. It is most famous as the base of SK-II Pitera, but other brands use galactomyces as well. The ingredient was discovered when scientists noticed the youthful hands of sake brewery workers and investigated the fermentation processes.
Galactomyces provides hydration, improves skin texture and tone, supports barrier function, and delivers gentle brightening effects. It is particularly effective at improving dull, uneven skin and refining texture over time. The fermentation process breaks down nutrients into smaller, more bioavailable forms that skin can easily absorb.
While SK-II trademarked Pitera for its specific galactomyces formulation, other brands like Missha, Some By Mi, and Cosrx offer galactomyces products. These alternatives provide similar benefits at lower price points, though formulations and fermentation processes differ between brands.
Fermentation byproducts (amino acids, vitamins, minerals, organic acids) hydrate, brighten, and support barrier function. Mimics skin natural moisturizing factors.
