Which Obagi Medical products should you buy? A practical guide

Start with the step you need, rather than buying an entire Obagi routine. Choose a cleanser for your skin type, a cream for the texture you like, and an optional treatment for a specific concern.

This guide covers Obagi Medical’s US range. Looking for the products sold in Japanese drugstores? Read Is Obagi Japanese? first.

1. Nu-Derm Foaming Gel for an everyday lather

For a gel cleanser that lathers

Obagi Nu-Derm Foaming Gel

Obagi Nu-Derm Foaming Gel

Nu-Derm Foaming Gel is the everyday cleansing choice for normal to oily skin. Choose it when you like working a gel into a lather to wash away excess oil and everyday residue.

It is different from the salicylic acid CLENZIderm cleanser below.

2. Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser for skin that leans dry

For a milder everyday cleanse

Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser

Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser is the choice to compare if your skin leans dry and you want an everyday wash. It belongs in the cleansing step, without adding an acne treatment.

Choose the cleanser your skin feels comfortable with; you do not need both Nu-Derm washes.

3. Nu-Derm Toner if you enjoy the extra step

If you enjoy a toner step

Obagi Nu-Derm Toner

Obagi Nu-Derm Toner

Nu-Derm Toner is an alcohol free option with witch hazel and aloe. Consider it if you already like using a cotton pad after cleansing, rather than buying it to complete a numbered system.

It contains fragrance. Toner is optional, and this is not an exfoliating acid treatment.

4. Daily Hydro-Drops for a hydrating serum

For hydration before cream

Obagi Daily Hydro-Drops Facial Serum

Obagi Daily Hydro-Drops Facial Serum

Daily Hydro-Drops adds a serum step with niacinamide and plant oils. Choose it if you want a hydrating layer under your moisturizer and enjoy the suspended oil droplet formula.

It contains fragrance. Skip the extra layer if your moisturizer already keeps skin comfortable.

5. ELASTIderm Facial Serum if you already like your cream

Keep your cream, add a firming serum

ELASTIderm Facial Serum is worth considering if you like your moisturizer but want a separate step aimed at firmer looking skin. It uses Obagi Medical’s Bi-Mineral Contour Complex.

Choose this or a firming cream based on the step you need. You do not have to buy both.

6. Lift Up & Sculpt if you want a firming moisturizer

For moisture with a focus on firmness

Obagi ELASTIderm Lift Up & Sculpt Facial Moisturizer

Obagi ELASTIderm Lift Up & Sculpt Facial Moisturizer

Lift Up & Sculpt combines moisturizing ingredients with Obagi Medical’s mineral complex. Consider it when you want your cream to focus on the appearance of firmness as well as dryness.

It contains fragrance. A firming cream will not give the result of a lifting procedure.

7. CLENZIderm cleanser for a wash with salicylic acid

For a rinse off acne cleanser

Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Daily Care Foaming Cleanser

Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Daily Care Foaming Cleanser

CLENZIderm Daily Care Foaming Cleanser uses 2% salicylic acid. It fits someone seeking an acne treatment in the wash step rather than adding another leave on product.

Contains menthol. Start with one acne product; combining treatments can increase dryness.

8. Pore Therapy if you prefer a leave on BHA

For a leave on acne treatment

Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Pore Therapy

Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Pore Therapy

Pore Therapy is a 2% salicylic acid treatment for acne prone skin. Choose it when you specifically want a leave on BHA, rather than a hydrating toner.

Contains alcohol and menthol. It can dry or irritate skin, especially alongside other acne treatments.

Do you need the whole system?

No. The toner, extra serums and separate eye products are optional choices. If you have a cleanser and moisturizer that already work, it is reasonable to keep them and consider only the step you want to change.

The two CLENZIderm products above both contain salicylic acid. Their label precautions warn about dryness and irritation when combining topical acne treatments. Start with one rather than adding both automatically.

Can you mix Obagi with Japanese skincare?

You can build a routine around products from different ranges. A watery Japanese lotion and an Obagi moisturizer may fill different steps; two active treatments may overlap. Look at their jobs and ingredients rather than matching every brand name.

For moisture basics, compare Curél and Hada Labo. For an active serum, first decide whether you want vitamin C or retinol, then introduce changes gradually.

Common questions

Are all Obagi products prescription only?

No. Obagi Medical sells nonprescription skincare as well as prescription products. This guide covers the nonprescription products listed here, not a prescription Nu-Derm treatment plan.

Is Obagi Medical the same as Japanese Obagi?

No. Obagi Medical’s US range is different from Rohto’s Japanese Obagi range. Similar names do not mean identical formulas.

Do I need Nu-Derm Toner with an Obagi cleanser?

No. Toner is optional. Choose it if you enjoy that step, rather than buying it just to complete a numbered range.
