Obagi Professional-C 10% vs 15% vs 20%: Which to choose?
Start by choosing a strength your skin can tolerate, not the biggest number. In Obagi Medical’s Professional-C range, 10% is the lowest concentration, 15% is the middle option, and 20% is the highest.
All three use L-ascorbic acid, a form of vitamin C. They are different products from Rohto’s Japanese C5, C10, C20 and C25 serums. The Obagi Japan guide explains that distinction.

Choose your Professional-C serum
The lowest Professional-C strength
Obagi Professional-C Serum 10%
Choose 10% if you want Obagi Medical’s lowest L-ascorbic acid concentration. The brand positions it for dry or sensitive skin, but it still contains fragrance and can sting.
A lower percentage is not a guarantee that reactive skin will tolerate it.

Obagi Professional-C Serum 15%
Choose 15% if your skin already tolerates vitamin C and you want the middle option. Obagi Medical positions this serum for normal to combination skin and a more even looking tone.
Contains fragrance and alcohol. There is no need to increase strength if your current serum suits you.

Obagi Professional-C Serum 20%
Choose 20% if you already tolerate concentrated vitamin C and want the highest strength in Professional-C. Obagi Medical positions it for normal to oily and combination skin.
Contains fragrance and alcohol. A stronger serum is not automatically a better choice.

The percentage is one part of the choice. A serum you can use comfortably is more useful than one you repeatedly stop because it irritates your skin. You do not need to “graduate” through all three strengths.
Obagi positions 10% toward dry or sensitive skin, 15% toward normal to combination skin, and 20% toward normal to oily or combination skin. Treat that as the brand’s guidance rather than a promise of tolerance. All three published formulas contain fragrance; the 15% and 20% formulas also list alcohol.
How do you fit it into a routine?
Obagi’s directions put Professional-C in the morning, after cleansing and before moisturizer, followed by sunscreen. Vitamin C does not replace sunscreen. If you are already introducing retinol or an exfoliating acid, avoid starting everything at once.
Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from direct sun and excessive heat. Follow the instructions on your product for use after opening. A cool cupboard is more practical than leaving it on a bright bathroom windowsill.
What about Melano CC or SkinCeuticals?
If you are happy with Melano CC, you do not need a more expensive serum to make the routine count. Professional-C is worth comparing when you specifically want a stated L-ascorbic acid concentration.
For the wider choice, read Melano CC, Japanese Obagi and SkinCeuticals. Be careful with the name: an opinion about Japanese Obagi C10 is not automatically a review of Professional-C 10%.
Common questions
Is Professional-C 20% the best strength for everyone?
No. Choose by tolerance and the formula you want. The highest concentration is not automatically the most useful choice for your skin.
Is Professional-C 10% the same as Japanese Obagi C10?
No. Professional-C belongs to Obagi Medical. Obagi C10 is part of Rohto’s Japanese range, with a different formula.
Does Obagi Professional-C contain fragrance?
Yes. Obagi lists fragrance in the published 10%, 15% and 20% formulas.
