FANCL Guide: Japan's Preservative Free Skincare Brand
FANCL’s entire identity is built on one principle: no preservatives. The brand was founded in 1980 specifically to create skincare without the preservatives that were causing skin irritation for many people. Every FANCL skincare product is formulated without parabens, synthetic preservatives, fragrance, or mineral oil.
To make preservative free products stable, FANCL uses airtight, small batch packaging. Products are designed to be used within a specific timeframe after opening (usually 60 to 120 days), and the packaging minimizes air and light exposure. The bottles are small on purpose. This is fundamentally different from most skincare brands that use preservatives to extend shelf life.
The Hero Product
FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil
FANCL’s most famous product and one of the most popular cleansing oils in Japan. Dissolves makeup and sunscreen thoroughly, emulsifies cleanly, and rinses without residue. The “mild” in the name reflects the preservative free, gentle formula.
This gets compared to DHC and Shu Uemura constantly. It sits between them in price and performance. For the full comparison: DHC vs Shu Uemura vs Attenir vs FANCL. See also our Shu Uemura guide for a deeper look at that brand.
The packaging is a small bottle by design (120ml) because it contains no preservatives and should be used within about 2 months of opening. FANCL also sells the Pore Cleansing Oil Black, which is the same concept but with charcoal added for deeper pore cleansing.

The Rest of the Range
FANCL Facial Washing Powder
A powder to foam face wash. The powder format means no water in the formula, which means no need for preservatives to prevent bacterial growth. You shake a small amount into wet hands, lather up, and wash. Gentle, effective, and consistent with the brand’s preservative free philosophy.
Enrich+ Emulsion Anti Wrinkle Milky Lotion
An anti aging emulsion from the Enrich+ line. Targets fine lines with a milky, hydrating texture. Preservative free, fragrance free. The Enrich line is FANCL’s anti aging range.
FANCL’s Supplements
Worth mentioning: FANCL is also one of the largest supplement companies in Japan. They sell collagen drinks, vitamin C supplements, and a range of beauty supplements that are extremely popular domestically. The skincare and supplement businesses are connected by the same “no unnecessary additives” philosophy. Their supplement stores are a common sight in Japanese train stations.
Where to Buy FANCL Outside Japan
FANCL has a US presence but it’s more limited than brands like DHC or Shiseido. Some specialty J beauty retailers carry the cleansing oil and key skincare products. The brand also has its own international shipping options.

FAQ
Why are FANCL products so small?
No preservatives means limited shelf life. FANCL designs products to be used within 60 to 120 days of opening, so the bottles are sized accordingly. Small packaging is a feature, not a limitation.
Is FANCL better for sensitive skin than regular skincare?
The preservative free, fragrance free approach means fewer potential irritants. If your skin reacts to preservatives specifically (which is more common than people realize), FANCL removes that variable entirely. It’s not automatically better for all sensitive skin, but it eliminates one of the most common causes of irritation.
How does FANCL Cleansing Oil compare to DHC?
Both are excellent cleansing oils at similar performance levels. DHC is olive oil based while FANCL uses a different oil blend in a preservative free formula with smaller packaging. DHC has a larger bottle and longer shelf life. The cleansing effectiveness is comparable. See the full comparison: DHC vs Shu Uemura vs Attenir vs FANCL.
